Interpretative Labels
Banner, 1840 Captain John Barrett (1776-1856) Grafton, VT Cotton, wood, metal, paint Gift of Mary X. Barrett, 1947.6.3 The election of 1840 was one of the most politically charged in American history. It pitted incumbent Martin Van Buren against challengers William Henry Harrison and John Tyler. Harrison and Tyler ran on a platform of reform and change for the new Whig Party against Van Buren's Democrats, hence the slogan on the topmost banner. Harrison was a war hero who had won a victory at the Battle of Tippecoanoe, and was often called "Old Tippecanoe," hence the lower banner, which was carried by Captain John Barrett of Grafton when he attended a political rally on Stratton Mountain in 1840. For more about that rally, see the campaign pin on the right hand side of the case on the opposite side of this room. Grafton went on to serve as an elector for the state of Vermont and cast the state's electoral college votes for Harrison's win.

Though Coolidge had spent most of his political career in Massachusetts -- serving in a variety of political offices including Governor -- his base of support in Vermont was strong and he won his home state with 78 percent of the vote. This pin speaks to that local pride, explicitly identifying Coolidge as a Vermonter and urging the reader to "elect him again."

Amy Brackett Pike of Stowe, Vermont, is referred to in local histories as "Crazy Amy," and is said to have been diagnosed with "religious mania." Records indicate she spent only a short period at the Vermont Asylum in 1852, while she lived with and was cared for by her family through most of her adult life. This coverlet, embellished with extensive embroidered text of a religious and political nature, reveals the creator's disdain toward elected leaders and their perceived misuse of taxes and, most importantly, her desire to build a new temple dedicated to the Lord in her hometown of Stowe. While seemingly incoherent at first glance, upon closer reading it becomes clear that the text and few embroidered images on the coverlet convey a complex, consistent belief system. Select transcriptions of the Embroidered Text: - To build the temple of the new era in Stowe, VT it is the set time to restore the kingdom the household of Sir Isaac Brackett and Sir Andrew Luce of Stowe, VT are the lawfull heirs to the crown and scepter measuring chain. Inaugural Gown, 1989 Worn by Governor Madeleine M. Kunin (1933 - ) Burlington, VT Velvet and satin fabric Gift of Governor Madeleine M. Kunin, 2020.5.3 For her second and third term inaugural balls, Kunin turned to Elaine Horseman of South Burlington. As with the first gown, Kunin worked together with the designer to design each dress. In both cases, her commitment to finding and working with a local designer was reflective of her focus on Vermont. Horseman later recalled that Kunin could have purchased a gown from anywhere in the world, but wanted to stay within Vermont. Both gowns feature design elements that Kunin and Horseman worked on together. The third gown, in black and white, is the only one of the three to have attracted media attention. The Burlington Free Press published a preview of Kunin wearing it in Horseman’s studio, in what was largely a focus on Horseman’s business. Horseman estimated that the dress took between 25 and 30 hours to make, and had been largely sewn by hand because of the delicacy of the fabric. The following week, a series of letters to the editor objected to the article, declaring the focus on Kunin’s gown to have been “prurient” and inappropriate. Wearing the third gown, Kunin became the first woman in American history to serve a third term as governor of a state.

Inaugural Gown, 1985 Worn by Governor Madeleine M. Kunin (1933 - ) Burlington, VT Velvet and chiffon fabric with crystal accents Gift of Governor Madeleine M. Kunin, 2020.5.1a-c When she was elected governor in November 1984, Kunin became the first woman in Vermont’s history to hold the state’s highest political office. On January 11, 1985, she was officially sworn in as governor, and that evening attended an inaugural ball in her honor. For the first time, it was the governor who wore a gown to dance at inauguration, not the first lady. This gown was designed and handmade by Lucy Strelcyzk of Essex Junction, Vermont. She and Kunin worked together on the design, which is deliberately reminiscent of Kunin’s Swiss heritage, and the gown was custom-fit for the new governor. This gown is the only one of the three that was worn a second time: Kunin brought it to Washington, D.C., and wore it to a reception at the White House to meet President Ronald Reagan.

Watchman’s Club, 1935-1936 Harry L. Hall (1878-1956) West Rutland, Vermont Burned wood Gift of William Hall, #2018.19 The lengthy and violent Vermont Marble strike of 1935 and 1936 gained national attention and, though the strikers gained no concessions, led to federal labor legislation. Harry Hall served as a night watchman at the West Rutland facility during the time of the strike. He vividly documented the strike on his “billy club” with a woodburning tool. Imagery shows bridges dynamited, strikers beaten, trains derailed, and the leader of the company and strikers depicted as a pig and rat respectively. A summary of the strike can be found near the handle of the club and reads, “power lines blasted, RR track blasted, bridge blasted, windows stoned, property damaged, street fights, heads cracked, a good time had by all.”

Context
There was fierce opposition to the creation in 1997 of a statewide property tax to fund education and thus this pin.

"Act 60, known as "The Equal Educational Opportunity Act", was a Vermont law enacted in June 1997 by the Vermont legislature intended to achieve a fair balance of educational spending across school districts, independent of the degree of prosperity within each district.[1] The law was in response to a Vermont Supreme Court decision in the Brigham vs. State of Vermont case,[2] wherein the court ruled that Vermont’s then existing educational funding system was unconstitutional, because it allowed students in towns with higher total property values to receive a higher level of education funding per pupil than students in towns with lower property values. Act 60 was followed by Acts 68 and 130, which addressed some imbalances caused by Act 60."

Product Model
Interpretative Labels
Portable Voting Booth Product Model, 1911 Made by David Mayo (1847 – 1934) Montpelier, VT Wood, metal, leather, fabric Gift of Earl Templeton, 1983.10.11a-c Vermont has long been proud of its democratic traditions, from Town Meeting Day debates to strong participation in local government. Much of our polling takes place in multi-use locations – school gymnasiums, church basements, grange halls, and other community gathering spaces. With this in mind, David Mayo’s design for a portable voting booth that could be folded up and stored flat when not in use made a lot of sense. Each modular booth attaches to the next in line, forming a bank of booths to fit any space. The writing platform folds down and faces a wall, and a curtain hangs at the back to preserve privacy. This model was constructed at the scale of 1 ½ inches to 1 foot. A fully constructed voting booth in this style would stand just over 6 feet tall. In 1911, Mayo developed this device specifically for use in Montpelier City Hall’s large auditorium, a multi-use space that required free-standing furniture without the use of floor or wall anchors. He used this small product model to demonstrate his system to Montpelier residents and City Council. On January 16, 1912, Montpelier City Council voted to acquire 66 panels of Mayo’s design, which would join to make 60 booths. The total cost for production was $287.75, or about $8,300 today. Unfortunately, none of the full-scale booths have survived to the present day. David Mayo was born in Chazy, New York, and came to Montpelier in the 1870s to apprentice as a wheelwright. He worked as a wheelwright, carriage maker, and general handyman for 47 years and retired to live with his daughter in Newport, Vermont, in 1914. He passed away in 1934. He constructed a number of small scale models that are today in the collections of the Vermont Historical Society. He does not seem to have applied for patents for any of them.

Each panel consists of two legs connected by a stretcher, solid upper halves, an upper stretcher connected with a leather hinged, and a table connected with a leather hinge. The panels connect together via the tables and upper stretchers. The curtains are blue and white cotton with a wire rod across the top. The rod is inserted to eye rings for hanging between the panels.

One panel is inked with the label, "portable voting Booth / Scale 1 1/2 inch to foot / David Mayo / Montpelier Vt / May 22 / 1911". Another panel is inked with the label, "Portable voting & folding Booth."

Context
Developed by David Mayo as a model for a portable system of election booths to be used at Montpelier City Hall
From an exhibit label:
"David Mayo was born in 1847 or 1848 in Chazy, New York. He moved to Montpelier in 1867 to apprentice as a wheelwright in the carriage-making shop of H.N. Taplin. Several of the inventors in this exhibit were wheelwrights, or wheel makers. They learned how to work with both wood and metal, two materials essential to most inventions of the time.
Mayo opened his own shop on Elm Street in 1871 and remained there for 42 years. He is a prime example of the ingenious Yankee, and his many models and drawings show his solutions to his customers' needs. When Mayo retired, the local newspaper reported on "the many models of things manufactured by him such as dump carts and sleds, snow scrapers, potato planters and potato hoes, hay wagons, sheep rack and snow roller, also election booths." To our knowledge, Mayo never patented any of his creations."
